On Friday, June 24, 2022, the internet erupted with news that after forty-nine bloody years, the constitutional “right” to abortion had been struck down by the Supreme Court. (By the way, this does not mean that abortion is banned in the United States, just that each state now has the right to decide the matter.) Many people openly rejoiced and celebrated, others spewed vitriolic hatred and called for violence. But there’s a big group in the middle – those who are confused by the lies of the media and social media influencers about what it all really means and how they should think and feel about it. Many of these people are people you know, so how can you reach them with the pro-life message?

Abortion is currently a big part of the national conversation, whether online or in person. But many Christians don’t know how to respond to common pro-abortion (truly pro-death) arguments — and I’ll give you some resources to help you in a minute. But first, I wanted to give some tips for interacting with others on this topic:

  1. Stay on topic. Because the case for abortion is so weak, proponents very often change the subject whenever you present something they cannot answer. Instead of responding to the objection that abortion ends a human life, the pro-abortion person will often divert attention with “red leaks”, such as abuse in the foster care system or poverty. While these topics can be important to discuss, they are often not really relevant to the question being asked. When things quickly go off the rails in a conversation, try to bring it back to the real issue: God, the Creator of life, created each person in his own image and made it clear that life begins at fertilization and that we have no right to take the life of another (murder). Don’t get caught up in an endless cycle of unrelated arguments!

  2. Know your business. Take the time, if you haven’t already, to read what the SCOTUS judges actually said and what this case entails. So many people have huge misconceptions about the case (for example, one of our staff heard from a teenager who thinks this ruling means women who miscarry will now go to jail!), and knowing the actual details is helpful in clearing up the confusion and bringing it back to the main issue – the life of the unborn child.

  3. If you engage with someone who is very hostile, remember Christ’s command to love our enemies.

  4. love your enemies. If you engage with someone who is very hostile, remember Christ’s command to love our enemies. Know that the person you are discussing this with is lost, with a mind blinded by sin and Satan. That’s not to say that we don’t suffer and even feel righteous indignation at their perverted views and the consequences of those views. But it helps us to love them, as Christ loved us when we were once his enemy.

  5. Move it to the gospel. Not only is now the perfect time to share the truth that life begins at the moment of fertilization and that every person deserves the right to life, but as Christians we can (and should!) -of the. Each person is made in the image of God, terribly and wonderfully, with an eternal soul that is so valuable that Jesus came and gave his life for us. It’s the perfect transition to the gospel message! Don’t just argue for life (but please do!), present the gospel message because ultimately it is the Word of God that changes lives. hearts and minds for now and for eternity.

  6. Pray. If you engage online, take a minute before you respond to pray. Ask the Lord for wisdom on how you should answer (or if you should answer – there comes a time when we just throw pearls in front of pigs and should just move on) and for his truth to have an impact on those who will read your comments or messages. If you are having a conversation in person, you may not have time to stop and pray, but be sure to pray after the conversation is over for the Lord to use the truth you shared to plant , watering or even harvesting gospel seeds. .
