Hard rock and metal goliath DIR EN GRAY documents two momentous shows in its upcoming live Blu-ray and DVD THE LAST DAYS OF STUDIO COAST. Fresh off the latest album Phalaris (posted June 15), the announcement revealed news of uncut footage from back-to-back performances on January 26 and 27 that marked the end of Tokyo’s famed Shinkiba venue. THE LAST DAYS OF STUDIO COAST released on September 14.
Studio Coast Concert Hall closed on January 30 and demolition of the building began the following month. Although Japan proposed a phased reopening of concerts just weeks after the first wave of the pandemic, declining attendance and repeated COVID-related cancellations continued to jeopardize the future of live entertainment.
Unfortunately, the operations management and its parent company Usen could not spare Studio Coast the financial impact that trickled down to the industry. Despite negotiations, they were unable to renew their lease with the owner of the property.
Since its launch in 2002, Studio Coast has regularly hosted weekend club events and touring musicians from Japan and overseas. It hosted over 2,400 attendees upstairs and on the balcony. A panel of sound reinforcement speakers, arranged in a colossal octagon, hung overhead and wowed onlookers over its 20-year life.
The medium-sized setting offered acoustic amenities that uniquely paired with DIR EN GRAY’s aggressive sonic cadence. It has become a fundamental stop for the band on countless national tours.
Other major artists commemorating the final countdown include THE BACK HORN, SiM, HEY-SMITH, HAWAIIAN6 and THE YELLOW MONKEY’s Kazuya Yoshii. DIR EN GREY, with a record 72 concerts at Studio Coast, is the fitting headliner to send what longtime fans remember as their second home.
THE LAST DAYS OF STUDIO COAST features 38 songs that cover DIR EN GRAY’s prolific history with the legendary concert hall. Double setlists include new singles Oboro and Ochita Koto no Aru Sora as well as classics audience KILLER LOOP, Fukaiand magnum opus VINOUCHKA. It is available on September 14 in two versions: Regular Edition and First Press Limited Deluxe.
Those who pre-order before July 18 will also receive an original mask case and access to an online viewing party with DIR EN GRAY members present in the chat.
In addition, members of the DIR EN GRAY fan club a knot unlock exclusive bundles sold on the GALAXY BROAD SHOP online store. The bundle includes an original travel cup and a sticker with the Blu-ray or DVD.
