THE last DVD rental shop still standing in Bournemouth is closing its doors after 40 years in business.

The Charminster Road films will close on September 2, after surrendering to the forces of online streaming services like Netflix.

Terry Whitaker, director of Flicks, described the shutdown as the “end of an era”.

He thinks it’s “a good time to go” after struggling with additional Covid business pressures in recent years.

Terry said: “Although we are sad to close after a particularly difficult few years, we had a good run.

“We managed to survive Blockbuster, so we must have done something right.

“Before the pandemic, obviously things were slowing down, but we were doing fine, and then with each lockdown, things only got worse.

“Technology has changed and the lockdown really hasn’t helped that, it’s meant people have gotten into the habit of staying in and everyone has gone and signed up for streaming services, so we’ve become less needed .”

Flicks opened in the mid 1980s in Charminster Road.

Terry added, “I started working here in the mid-90s, just before dial-up internet started to take off.

“I started working here in 1996, my family took over from the original two owners, Farz and Reza, and have run the store ever since.

“I will now be working for another company that owns this shop, so I will get into the real estate side of things.

“Before closing, we sell all our films and say our last goodbyes to our customers.

“We know we were loved, we’ve had so many messages and people saying they’re sad to see us go.

“I have seen some customers come in as children and now come in with their children during my stay here.

“We are a part of many people’s lives as they grow up and we are always proud of that.

“It will be a tough final day but Charminster was an absolute blast, we made great memories and good friends.”

DVD and video rental chain Blockbuster ceased operations in the UK in 2013.
