Downton Abbey Star Hugh Bonneville just dashed the hopes of period drama fans by downplaying the possibility of returning to do a third movie.

The English actor plays Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham in the Downtown franchiserole he recently reprized in Downton Abbey: A New Erawhich premiered in the UK in April this year.

In a recent interview, however, Bonneville suggested that the early 20th century franchise, consisting of six TV seasons and two movies, has now “run its course”.

“I suspect, on a practical level, it’s run its course now,” the actor said. The Hollywood Reporter on the possibility of shooting a third film.

“I think it was a good time to quit. I don’t know. I’m never going to guess the future, but I thought for a while, actually, yes, why not, let’s continue.

“But I think it might get a little thin. I think the second movie was so joyful and such a good note to end the story on. And I feel like it can end. There are still some open doors in, but I think it might be a good time to stop.”

While a third Downton Abbey The movie may not be on the cards yet, Bonneville is currently starring in another series of heartwarming films and is set to return for a highly anticipated third installment.
