Sonic the Hedgehog 2 hit theaters – and theaters only – on April 8. It began airing on Paramount Plus Monday night, just under seven weeks later.

The pandemic has upended the way new movies are released in 2020 and 2021, triggering an unprecedented wave of theatrical films hitting theaters and streaming services alike. This year, however, streaming release dates are all over the map.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is an example of a movie that hasn’t received official confirmation of its release date until – surprise! — he appeared.

Here is all you need to know.

Where is Sonic the Hedgehog 2 streaming?

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 airs first on Paramount More. The film is distributed by Paramount Pictures, which is owned by the same parent company as Paramount Plus.

Is Sonic 2 “free” to stream?

Paramount Plus does not charge extra to watch the film on its service. And even though Paramount Plus has two different tiers, it’s not about “paywalling” the movie behind the more expensive membership tier. Still, Paramount Plus requires a paid subscription, so nothing about the service is literally free — unless you watch the movie while signed up for a free trial. Paramount Plus offers a standard 7-day free trial for all new members.

Why now?

Without notice, Sonic 2 began streaming late Monday night.

For Sonic 2 and similar films, Paramount is guaranteeing them at least 45 days exclusively in theaters before making them available to stream on Paramount Plus. In this case, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 followed an exact 45-day timeline, becoming available to stream at midnight ET on the 46th day after hitting theaters.

This time, Paramount didn’t appear to give official confirmation when the movie would be available to stream until it actually happens. Another Paramount film – The Lost City, which hit theaters in March and became available to stream in May – followed the same 45-day deadline. But in the case of The Lost City, the company put out a press release the day before it was released with Paramount Plus.

And Paramount doesn’t always stream a movie like clockwork. Like The Lost City, Jackass Forever hit theaters in February and landed on Paramount Plus almost exactly 45 days later. But Scream, which hit theaters in January, took about a week longer than that.
