With the best free DVD ripper, you can backup your movie collection and record it digitally for easy and convenient streaming around your home.

The best free DVD ripper is Handbrake – an open source tool that can save movies in virtually any format, with no limit on the number of files you can save or the length of the videos. However, it cannot handle DRM protected discs, so we have also put together a collection of other free DVD rippers with different feature sets, so that you can choose the one that suits you the best.

Some DVD rippers are better suited for ripping movies, keeping subtitles, menus, and other details intact, while others work better for ripping other data.

Remember to check the intellectual property law in your country first before ripping these DVDs. Much like CDs, there aren’t any international copyright laws that cover free DVD rippers, so make sure it’s legal where you live.

Over a decade in the making, the software has finally made it to version 1.0.0, it’s – or at least it looks – a bit more complicated than some of the others we’re looking at here, but don’t let this fool you. to discourage. . By default, there is no support for bypassing copy protection, but it’s something you can get around with a little research (keeping the intellectual property laws in your country in mind. ).

As with other programs, there are a number of presets you can choose from, but you can also manually customize each ripping session if you prefer. If you are working with ISO images or disk folders, it is possible to queue multiple encoding jobs to run consecutively to avoid having to be present at the end of each. The sheer level of control makes HandBrake worth a try.

DVD ripping made easy, with step-by-step instructions

Characteristics

Operating system: the Windows

Reasons to buy

+Clean and clear interface+Can rip entire DVD or just parts+Ready-to-use device profiles

Reasons to avoid

Some features require activation

Freemake is a name synonymous with powerful and high-quality free software, and Freemake Video Converter doesn’t let it down. Its free DVD ripper has a clean and crisp interface, it’s a pleasure to use, and you’ll never have any doubts about what you’re supposed to do.

Launch the software, go to DVD section and choose your drive from the list. After analyzing the disc, you will need to indicate the video track you are interested in. You can even take it a step further and cut out segments of a video to extract rather than just grabbing the whole thing. The shortcuts at the bottom of the screen provide access to common output formats (AVI, MKV, device-specific formats); just make your selection, hit “Convert”, and you’re done.

Unfortunately, although it does not contain any additional software, the latest version of Freemake Video Converter adds watermark to the ripped videos. If you can live with that, this is one of the most convenient DVD rippers out there.

3. MKV brand

Rip DVDs and Blu-rays without any annoying setup

Characteristics

Operating system: Windows, macOS

Reasons to buy

+Extremely easy to use+Fast DVD Ripping+Works with Blu-ray discs

Reasons to avoid

Few customization options

If you’ve used free DVD ripping software before, MakeMKV might look a bit familiar – it looks more like DVD Decrypter. Aside from handling DVDs, the program is also capable of ripping Blu-ray discs, and the process works exactly the same in each case (although it is interesting to note that Blu-ray ripping doesn is only free when the program is in beta).

The great thing about MakeMKV is that there is so little to think about. Launch the program, analyze your disc, choose the track you want to extract, indicate where the output file should be saved, then press the “Make MKV” button. That’s really all there is to it. There’s no hassle, no complex setup – just scan, extract and go.

4. DVDFab HD decryptor

Limited options, but handy if you need to rip DVD quickly

Characteristics

Operating system: the Windows

Reasons to buy

+DVD and Blu-ray rips+Save movies in their original formats

Reasons to avoid

Few customizable parametersOnly the extraction component is free

DVDFab is an unusual case. The full DVDFab suite is not free, but its DVD ripping component is. When you download the software, it installs as a trial version, but DVDFab HD Decrypter – which you need for DVD and Blu-ray ripping – remains free forever.

The free part is rather limited, allowing you to rip discs in Full Disc or Main Movie modes only. This means that the free version is nowhere near as versatile as the other programs we’ve covered here, but it still has its place.

For example, this can be useful if you want to extract video files from a disc and keep their original formats while transferring them to your hard drive. You are then free to import the files into another program for further work if you wish, or just use your favorite DVD software to watch the videos without needing to insert a disc.

+Super fast DVD ripping+Ready-to-use conversion profiles+Can extract audio to MP3 format

Confusing Marketing

When you install the free version of WinX DVD Ripper, you will notice that it is actually the Platinum edition in trial mode. It lacks a few of the features of the premium version (mostly speed related and a few specific DRM cracks), but you’ll still have a powerful DVD ripper that you can use indefinitely.

WinX DVD Ripper can be used to rip DVDs directly, but it also works with ISO images and DVD file folders. Once your entry has been analyzed – a process that doesn’t take long – you can choose from a series of ready-made profiles. These profiles help you quickly produce a video suitable for playback on specific mobile devices or, for example, ideal for uploading to Facebook.

You can choose to extract the built-in subtitles or embed your own, and you can select which audio tracks to include; everything is beautifully simple and pleasantly fast.
