Unexplored has grossed $373m (£285m) worldwide, making it the fourth highest-grossing film of 2022 so far.

The film also became the fourth highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time, behind Warcraft, Detective Pikachu and Carnage.

Unexplored follows clever thief Nathan Drake (Tom Holland), who is recruited by seasoned treasure hunter Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) to recover a fortune lost by Ferdinand Magellan 500 years ago.

The film had been in development hell for years, with Wahlberg originally slated to play the main protagonist before being dumped by his older sidekick.

Unexplored was originally supposed to hit theaters in December 2020. However, due to COVID-19, its release date was postponed several times until the film was finally released in the UK on February 11, 2022.

Although it was a box office hit, critics watched Unexplored less favorably. As a result, he currently only holds a 40% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Tom Holland need not worry, however, as the viewership rating stands at 90%, suggesting there is plenty of demand for a sequel. And with a Sony executive describing Unexplored as a new franchise, it looks like those who enjoyed the first movie will likely get a second helping in the near future.
