Prime Day PlayStation deals FAQ

Will I be able to buy a PlayStation 5 on Prime Day?

PlayStation 5 consoles are currently listed as invite-only on Amazon, and we’ve seen Prime members get first access to PS5 orders in the past. The PlayStation 5 is still one of the most sought-after products, so stock is limited even when it’s not a shopping holiday.

Meanwhile, Best Buy had PS5 consoles in stock for Totaltech members on July 12 at 12 p.m. ET as part of its Black Friday sale in July.

If I buy a PS4 game, can I upgrade it to PS5 later?

Several PlayStation games, like Ghost of Tsushima, have separate PS4 and PS5 versions. If you insert a PS4 disc into a standard PlayStation 5, the console will download the digital PS5 version of the game, if available. Otherwise, the PS5 will install the PS4 version of the game.

Physical PS4 games cannot be upgraded if you have an all-digital PS5. A few games cost less for PS4, like Call of Duty: Vanguard, and will charge you a $10 fee to upgrade to the PS5 version.

Should I buy the standard PlayStation 5 or the all-digital PS5?

Sony makes two versions of the PlayStation 5, the standard $500 version and the $400 All-Digital Edition. The only difference is that the all-digital version doesn’t have a Blu-ray disc drive, so you won’t be able to buy physical copies of games or play movies on Blu-ray and DVD.

If you already have a collection of PS4 discs, these will also work on PS5; this can be important if you want to upgrade the PS4 games you own to the PS5 version. Used games sometimes sell for less than digital copies. That said, the all-digital PS5 is more affordable and well worth the price if you find it in stock.

What is the difference between PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra and Premium?

PlayStation Plus is the service required to access online multiplayer and other features on PlayStation, and Sony recently introduced two new tiers: PlayStation Plus Extra and PlayStation Plus Premium.

The original PlayStation Plus plan is now called PlayStation Plus Essential and retains its price of $10 per month or $60 per year. Essential offers new games to download every month, cloud save storage, special discounts, and a game library for PS5 owners.

PlayStation Plus Extra adds a downloadable library of over 400 PS4 and PS5 games, including Sony exclusives like Spider-Man, The Last of Us and Ghost of Tsushima. The Extra plan costs $15 per month or $100 per year.

PlayStation Plus Premium includes

access to 340 games dating from PS1 to PS3 and PSP; titles can also be streamed to computers. Players will also have special trial access to the latest PlayStation releases like Horizon Forbidden West. PlayStation Plus Premium costs $18 per month or $120 per year.
