As we enjoy the holidays with our friends and family, virtually or in person, it is always nice to reflect on the year we have had. With the pandemic still affecting us and tragically killing many Canadians, it is also a time to mourn those we have lost, to be grateful for the friends and family we have and to appreciate the luck. that we have to live in this great country and in this amazing place that is Belleville.

The Belleville Public Library and the John M. Parrott Art Gallery had another busy year. Did you know that 40 staff members work in your library and gallery? I want to thank our staff for all they do to provide service to our community.

To our valued customers, thank you for your continued support and for making us smile every day. At last count, we have 21,741 active cardholders, and that number is growing every week. There have been over 53,500 visitors to our facilities to date in 2021, which is a dramatic reduction in recent years due to pandemic restrictions that have forced us to operate with a pickup-only service for several months. In 2019, our last normal year, we had 196,206 visitors to our facility.

One of our basic services is providing a loan collection for your enjoyment. Our customers have viewed 200,382 titles to date in 2021, of which approximately 72% are physical articles. How does that break down in terms of what people borrowed? The most borrowed material was the print fiction collection, followed by print non-fiction, then DVD movies. Of the fiction collection, mystery was the most popular genre, followed by romance, Canadian literature, graphic novels and biographies. Our French collection also circulated well this year. The non-fiction collection offered a wide range of material for our customers with the Dewey Decimal System 600 range seeing the highest number of cases, followed by the 700 range. The 600 range includes Applied Science and Cookbooks, and the 700 range includes subjects such as arts, music and sports. We have also loaned approximately 800 books from other libraries through the interlibrary loan program.

On the digital side, our customers have enjoyed over 46,000 eBooks and 12,000 audiobooks on Overdrive so far in 2021. We have also streamed over 18,000 titles on Hoopla, with downloadable audiobooks being the most popular format. . Our customers have downloaded over 3,000 movies to the Kanopy streaming platform and 2,700 magazines to Flipster, and we have had over 170,000 visits to our website.

While the pandemic made our program and event statistics a little odd, between virtual and in-person programs so far in 2021, we had 375 programs with a total attendance of around 36,000 people. While our in-person programs are now on hold until further notice, we have many virtual programs and video presentations that you can enjoy in the comfort of your home over the coming weeks.

Other services that people have enjoyed at the library and gallery include 6,400 sessions using our public computers, 613 students attending class tours, and 57 gallery programs and workshops with a total attendance of 11,215 people. The Parrott Gallery is always open to the public and many of our exhibitions are also available online.

I would like to thank the Belleville Public Library Board, the City of Belleville and the Province of Ontario for all the funding and support they provide to keep our library and gallery services strong for our community.

It is a pleasure and an honor to serve this community and I am truly grateful to have the opportunity to work with our staff, clients, community partners, city council, staff and administrators.

Best wishes everyone for a safe and happy holiday season and a happy new year!
